I love a good quote—especially one that causes me to stop and ponder its depth and meaning. There is a thrill in learning and growing through God’s work in the lives of others.
We are crazy-blessed to have a glimpse into the Christ-walk of not only our contemporary leaders, but also of those who have gone before us. Their godly wisdom echoes across time.
So take a few moments and “listen” to the words of these faithful pilgrims of the faith. Draw encouragement and insight from their journeys. Take joy in the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives.
The following are a few of my favorites:
“The Christian shoemaker does his duty not by putting little crosses on the shoes, but by making good shoes, because God is interested in good craftsmanship.”
― Martin Luther
“And shall I pray Thee change Thy will, my Father,
Until it be according unto mine?
But, no, Lord, no, that never shall be, rather
I pray Thee blend my human will with Thine.
I pray Thee hush the hurrying, eager longing,
I pray Thee soothe the pangs of keen desire—
See in my quiet places, wishes thronging—
Forbid them, Lord, purge, though it be with fire.”
― Amy Carmichael
“I have never met the man I could despair of after discerning what lies in me apart from the grace of God.”
― Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest
“God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him”
― John Piper
“We need never shout across the spaces to an absent God. He is nearer than our own soul, closer than our most secret thoughts”
― A.W. Tozer, The Pursuit of God
“We never grow closer to God when we just live life. It takes deliberate pursuit and attentiveness.”
― Francis Chan, Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God
“Oh, will you pray? Stop now and pray, lest desire turn to feeling and feeling evaporate.”
― Amy Carmichael
Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise (Proverbs 19:20).
